Q: The power locks in my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee have slowly gone downhill. Any suggestions?
I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The power door locks are slowly starting to die. It started with my rear locks only working once in awhile and now the driver side only locks manually. I'm looking for any suggestions before I take it to a mechanic. I'm in a new town and don't know any reputable mechanics yet. Thanks!
A: Make sure you have a good ground connection between the engine and the chassis. The locks pull a lot of current, so if that ground is bad they won't work too well. The best way to tell if it's a voltage problem is to lock and unlock the doors while you're driving at night and see if it makes the headlights dim or flicker.
Q: How Can I turn on the alarm chirp on a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V8?
I own a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2L V8. The car is in pristine condition. The only thing that bothers me is the alarm. There is no problem with the alarm. It works fine. I was just wondering if this vehicle is capable of having the horn chirp or flashing lights when locking or unlocking the vehicle.
A: it needs to be turned on in the body controller with the dealer scan tool.

Q: How do I replace lift supports for a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee and its original lift supports for the liftgate no longer function properly. I bought two new lift supports to replace the old ones and the people at the auto parts store said that they were for my vehicle and would fit. But I tried to replace them and I have no idea how to! It just seems like the ends on the new ones don't match the ends of the old ones. They are both that ball looking connection. Can anyone help?
A: there,s a clip on both ends of it that you pop off,,and it lets it come off,,the new ones should have new clips on them,,and they just pop back on,,be care full when you remove the old ones,,the hatch may fall on you,, i own a repair shop,,and do this all the time,,it,s not a hard job to do,,good luck with it,,i hope this helps.

A: I don't have any blue prints but I go on ebay and look at all the difference designs they have!
Q: 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Power Door Lock Not Engaging?
1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with power door locks and windows. When you click the remote to lock the doors the driver door lock motor buzzes but the door won't lock. I have to lock it manually. Is there a part I need to replace, and what is it called? Is it difficult? Thanks in advance.
A: The lock actuator has worn out and needs to be replaced. They aren't terribly difficult to do. If you've never done it yourself though, I wouldn't recommend it unless you really wanted to in order to save some money. You have to remove the door trim and you can tear some stuff up if you don't know what you're doing.
The lock actuators cost a little under $100 each and one website that I used for directions on how to change them out (doesn't have 1998s though) gave the job a difficulty rating of 5/10 which was about right in my opinion as well. You can get the lock actuators at a Jeep dealership or online for even cheaper if you take the time and do some surfing.
Jeep dealerships will also replace it for about $300. I have a 2000, but I don't think the price would be much different.
Q: How much is a sunroof for a 1998 grand jeep cherokee?
Was driving 55 mph in very high nasty winds and my hard top sunroof just blew off my 1998 grand jeep cherokee limited!!!! i went back to find it - but it was gone. heard that the sunroof might not have been "locked in" how much are these to replace? i can slide the bottom half but as for the hard shell top - it's gone and it's winter here so i need it. how much does something like this cost to be fixed? i dont have alot of money.
A: Well, I would take a stab at some answer, The chance of finding this at a junk yard is practically NILL..sorry. Impossible, no, but some BIG junk yards can search local yards for you.
Consider to contact the parts department of the Jeep dealer for parts costs.
Personally would get sunburned on head with a sun roof,,but that comes with age!!
Q: Disable autolocks on a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
I recently purchased a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee without an owners manual. Since I am cheap, I refuse to buy one. How can I disable the auto door locks that engage when the vehicle is in motion? Please if you have the owners manual, let me know how!
A: If it has the overhead display, press "Menu" until it reads "Disable Rolling Locks." Press "Step" and you are done. If it doesn't have the overhead display, your local dealer can do it for you, and most do it at no charge.
Q: I own a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. On the Drivers Door the Locking mechanism is broken, What is the actual name
The Left front door locking mechanism is broken on my Jeep Grand Chrerokee. I cannot shut the door at all, (the mechanism) is in the locked position. What is the actual name of this part and where can I purchase the part?
A: Per the Mopar Jeep Parts catalog 1991-1993 YJ, XJ, ZJ..
14 LATCH, Door
5503 3436-7 1 w/o Power Locks
5503 3438-9 1 w/Power Locks
Since the ZJ went from 93-98 these number should be correct but could be verified by a Jeep parts dept (Jeep Dealer).
Q: Red-flashing light in dashboard of 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, what is it?
I just bought a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee today and I noticed tonight that there is a red flashing light in the dashboard on the drivers side. It went off when I unlocked the door and then went back on after I locked it. When I turned the car on and locked the doors, it went off. But as soon as I shut the car off and then locked the doors again, it went back on. The dealership I bought it at said it had standard security system (which I assume is just regular door locks since I didn't receive a remote or anything). Are they wrong? Is this a security system and if it is, how do I get a remote for it and in the mean time if the alarm goes off how on earth would I shut it off???
Thanks for all the answers so far. To the poster who said look at the manual--I don't have a manual, the car was bought used. To the person who mentioned the "bump" on the key--the key is a flat piece of metal. And to the person who said I wouldn't be able to start the car from the passenger side if the drivers side door was locked--haven't had any problems so far!!! No annoying honking noise as of yet. I guess I'll hit the Jeep dealer and talk with them to see what they say. Thanks!
A: it maybe the internal security device, mine has one that blinks when not in drive or engine turned on...

I need a new one and would like to see how much I have to put out for the fix.I know the radiator is about $150 -200 bucks so I figure it's about $350 or so.
A: to be honest id goto a junkyard and get one out of a jeep there as for the labor i believe its 1.5 hrs labor its been a while since i replaced a radiator in a jeep but if memory serves me right that should be correct but every shop is different
Q: 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Suspension Rattle?
1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 127,000. Inline 6.
This Jeep was bought 3 weeks ago used. Driving around my neighborhood I hear assorted rattles from the undercarriage around the rear axle and under the back seat. I hear little on very flat roads at higher speeds (above 35mph). The exhaust system seems very tight and not wobbly. Could the rear shocks be so bad they're causing this rattle? What else could it be?
A: There are many bushes in the rear suspension which can cause the rattles/symptoms you describe.
If the rear shocks are weak, they will not rattle. You will have a 'spongy' ride and the rear end would jump around on rough surfaces.
I suggest you check the bushes and the mountings on the rear trailing arms, which can create a severe rattle. If these look firm and the rubbers are fine (no play) then check the mountings for the shock absorbers. While you are at it, you may do well to check the mountings/bushes on the stabiliser rod.
Q: How can I fix my 1998 jeep grand cherokee's drivers side heated seat?
Heated seat has never worked. Passenger side works fine.
A: the only ones with the heated seat recalls were later WJ models. most lkely you have a bad element in the seat. it will have to be tested with an ohm meter and a wiring diagram.
